The Venice Architecture Biennale ended less than a month ago, and here comes the announcement of the next director for the 2025 edition: it will be Carlo Ratti. The nomination for the 19th International Architecture Exhibition took place at the suggestion of the president Roberto Cicuttoin accordance with Pietrangelo Buttafuocopresident of the Venice Biennale for the four-year period March 2024 – 2027.
A choice that seems to continue along the path of choosing to look at architecture as one open discipline and ready to be contaminated. It is no coincidence that among his first comments he said that «To face a world on fire, architecture must be able to harness all the intelligence that surrounds us».
The Professor Carlo Ratti actually a teacher at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) et al Politecnico di Milanohas an education as an architect and engineer, director Senseable City Lab and founding partner of the architecture and innovation studio CRA-Carlo Ratti Associati (Turin, New York City, London) has always paid special attention to new technologies.
But it also is one in ten scientists the most internationally cited in the field Spatial Planninghe has co-authored more than 750 scientific publications, including the recent “Atlas of the Smart City” (written with Antoine Picon, published by Yale University Press). Former speaker in NOWregularly publishes opinion articles in important international media, incl The New York Times, Financial Times, The Guardian, Project Syndicate, Le Monde, Süddeutsche Zeitung, Corriere della Sera, La Repubblica, El Pais.
Three of his projects – the Digital water pavilion, Copenhagen bike AND Scribit – were included in TIME magazine’s annual “Best Inventions of the Year” list. Fast Company magazine named him one of “America’s Most Influential Designers” and Blueprint magazine named him one of “People Who Will Change the Design World.” Bloomberg called him the “philosopher of the sensory city”.
