Living room renovation, 11 ideas from interior designers to inspire you

Dawn Gepfert, principal of Dawn P. Gepfert Design in Southport, Conn., is a big believer in enhancing a living room’s existing architecture, such as moldings, windows and wall units: “If a room lacks architectural interest, think about creating it yourself,” he says. In the case of the living room pictured, Gepfert notes, “There were too many odd finishes that needed to be removed and updated.” To solve the problem, Gepfert approached the problem in a variety of ways, such as judicious use of moldings and paneling and redesigning the fireplace and its mantel. He also replaced the coffered ceiling with more modern tiling. “One of the strong architectural features is the windows and French doors overlooking the garden. Since privacy was not an issue, we simply left the windows as they were so as not to block the view and light,” says Gepfert. “Sometimes, less is more“.

White walls in the living room offer endless possibilities, instantly creating a bright space, a blank canvas for decoration,” says Dahlman. Dahlman Interiors favors Benjamin Moore Chantilly Lace (OC-65), a bold white: “Nothing refreshes a space more,” adds Dahlman.
